Foam mattress toppers pose a significant waste challenge on campuses due to low durability and requiring specialized recycling facilities.

Often discarded after 1-2 years, they contribute to landfill overflow and environmental degradation, as they are slow to decompose and may release harmful chemicals.

Recycling these toppers is crucial to mitigate their impact, as it diverts them from landfills and promotes the reuse of valuable materials, ultimately fostering a more sustainable campus environment for current and future students.

Polyurethane foam mattress toppers are effectively impossible to recycle. We work to reduce waste by renting toppers instead of selling them. While this reduces demand by tens of thousands of toppers, we wanted to do more. We work with campuses to sell them wholesale mattresses made from recycled materials. This year, we are launching pilots to pick up all non-Eepy mattress toppers from campuses to get them to the few specialized recycling facilities across the country.

Due to the lack of recycling options and a resale market, most college students end up throwing out their used mattresses and foam toppers. These products are made from non-biodegradable synthetic foam and fibers, and contain hazardous chemicals that can leach into drinking water. Furthermore, since they don't compact well, they take up a lot of space, further compounding the growing space crisis in landfills. How do you partner with campuses?

SO HOW DOES A RENTAL WORK

Whether you're renting a Bigger Bed or MicroFridge, you'll follow the 3 Rs: rent, relax return. To rent online, just choose your school. Then relax while we bring your order to your room and set it up for you. Then at the end of the year we'll come back for the return pickup. Easy as that.

How do you improve equity on campus

With many campuses we work with, we provide low-income students with free toppers for every rental. Within a few years, every low-income first year student in need receives a topper at no cost.

How do you improve sustainability on campus?

Through renting our Bigger Beds, we reduce demand for cheap, disposable mattress toppers. We are committed to responsibly recycling all foam at the end of its life.
