After 43 years, 4 music directors, countless concerts, tours and recordings, Mark Yancich is taking his final bows as timpanist of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Mark joined the orchestra in 1981, succeeding his brother Paul who left to become timpanist of the Cleveland Orchestra. So for the first time in almost 50 years, there won’t be a Yancich behind the kettledrums at the back of the ASO. Prior to Robert Shaw hiring him, Mark was timpanist and principal percussion of orchestras in Maracaibo and Caracas, Venezuela. He can be heard on over 120 recordings with the Atlanta Symphony, including most of the great choral/orchestral repertoire with Shaw conducting. When asked about any outstanding memories, Mark said, “I’m simply going to miss being on stage playing the world’s greatest orchestral repertoire with some wonderful colleagues and doing it for the appreciative audiences here in Atlanta. I’ve been lucky to enjoy a golden age of growth and performance excellence with some fantastic musicians here in Atlanta. Like fine wine, these are memories I’ll savor and cherish. I can’t think of anything more personally or professionally satisfying than that!"

When the ASO premiered Tyshawn Sorey’s ‘Adagio (for Wadada Leo Smith)’ in March of 2023, we recorded it! Now that it’s won the Pulitzer Prize for music, it seemed like the right time to share the first few minutes with the world. Featuring Tim McAllister, saxophone. Stephen Mulligan, conductor.

Many thanks to our concertmaster David Coucheron and his sister Julie for saving the day on Thursday with an incredible, last-minute performance. Just when it was looking like we were going to have to cancel the pre-concert chamber music performance due to a musician's illness, David and Julie stepped up to offer up exquisite performances of violin sonatas by Beethoven and Grieg. Perhaps only those who have played together since childhood could have pulled off this feat?! The plan for tonight is to have the originally scheduled performance of Brahms' String Quintet No. 2 in G Major, which is free and open to the public at 6:45 pm. Our musicians continually impress with their generosity in performing pre-concert chamber music. Big thanks to Christina Smith, Principal Flute, for coordinating this incredible series. 📸 @randlines
